Our authentic Peruvian organic maca is personally sourced by us from our farm in the mountains of Junin, Peru. It is socially responsible with $1 per bag donated directly to our charity fund to support the local community of San Jose de Quero. It is Fair Choice, Organic certified and ethically sourced direct farm to table. All the steps we take are to create a sustainable method of trade that benefits all involved. Once harvested our maca is naturally dried for 3 months at altitude, then gelatinised to remove the starch and bacteria, making it ready to eat.
What is Maca?
In Peru maca is often labelled as the ‘food of the God’s’ and has been a staple source of nutrition by the Inca for centuries. It is a root vegetable commonly consumed to promote energy, vitality, virility, hormone balance, and fertility. It is also a Peruvian natural remedy to combat stress and fatigue.
It comes in 3 different colours – yellow, red and black. Yellow constitutes 60% of the annual harvest, red 25% and black only 15%. Once harvested it is dried for 3 months at altitude before processing. Raw maca powder is the powdered form of the dried maca bulb.
In Peru raw maca is always consumed cooked as it is high in starch, bacteria and aflatoxin producing mould. It is traditionally boiled in teas, soups or stews as a food source and a medicinal. Scientific studies have shown that cooking raw maca enhances its medicinal properties (read more here). We do not export raw maca powder due to the risk of it being consumed raw. Our yellow maca powder is gelatinised (pressure cooking – does not contain gelatin, 100% vegan friendly) to improve absorption, creating an easy to drink, nutrient rich powder. Gelatinising simulates traditional Incan preparation methods. It is ready to eat, easy to digest and is 2x more potent than our raw powder. Gelatinised maca is light brown in colour and has a rich, malt caramel aroma and flavour. Macamide concentration 0.25% Our red and black maca is concentrated via the process of atomisation (concentrated extraction) to produce a low-flavour powder, rich in bioactive components (macamides and macaenes).
It rapidly dissolves and is 10x more potent than our raw powder. Red and black maca contain different concentrations of macamides, specific for regulation of different systems. They both offer more targeted treatment of different conditions compared to yellow gelatinised maca. High-dose atomised extracts are ideal for chronic, stress-related disorders and hormonal or mental health imbalances. Macamide concentration 1.0%
